Imperial Hotel U16 Central League Div 3 Final - May 5th 2012 in BallyMac - 7:30pm

Final Score - St Pats 3-10 Castlegregory 4-13.

U16 - Central league Div3 Final. Saturday evening saw the Imperial Hotel U16 Central Region Division 3 final played.  It was an outstanding 13-a-side game between St. Pats Blennerville and Castlegregory played in Ballmacelligott.

Both teams started evenly with points exchanged in the opening two minutes.  St. Pats by Willie Hurley and Casltegregorys by Michael Mulally.  St. Pats had most of the ball in the opening minutes but were lucky not to concede a early goal when a goal bound shot was expertly blocked by the defence, but St. Pats quickly regrouped and from the resultant clearance they carried the ball the length of the field and were unlucky not to score but got a 45.  The goal keeper, Aidan O’Halloran, came up to take the 45.  With Castlegregory expecting him to kick for a point, he cleverly made a quick pass and received the ball back to kick a clever point. Casltegrepory responded with a point straight away, leaving the score 0-02 to 0-02 after 8 minutes.

St. Pats stepped up gear for a while after that, with Brandon Boyle scoring a goal, Castlegregorys David O’Dowd was unlucky not to save it, Willie Hurley added a point.  But then went 10 minutes without scoring.  In this 10 minute spell St Pats defended well but still conceded 2 points, 1 from a quick pass from a free kick and 1 from a free kick, both by Brandon Hoare.

St. Pats then got 3 quick, unanswered points from play, Jake Foley, Willie Hurley and Tommy Lynch the scorers, leaving the score 1-07 to 0-05 after 22 minutes being played in the first half.

Castlegregory knowing they needed a few scores before half time stepped up a gear and did just that, scoring 1-03, unanswered, in the last 5 minutes of the half. Maurice Slattery got 1 of the points, after a great pass from Brandon Hoare set him up. Michael Mulally scored the next of the points before Brandon Hoare with more or less the last kick of the half was at the end of a great play, involving most of the forwards and slotted the ball home for a goal.

This left the half time score St. Pats 1-07, Castlegregory 1-08.

The opening minutes of the second half mirrored the first, with both teams exchanging points.  St. Pats point came first from a quickly taken 45 by Brandon Boyle to Roman Laucher.  Castlegregorys point came from Brandon Hoare.  Castlegregory took control of the game for the next 10minutes, scoring a goal from a long high free kick taken by Michael Mulally looked to be falling just short into the hands of St Pats keeper, Aidan O’Halloran, when the ball clipped the cross bar knocking it out of Aidan’s hands and into the arms of Castlegregorys Timmothy Moriarty who slotted the ball into the net from 3 yards out.  And then Castlegregory might have got another goal from the move of the match,  the ball was cleared from inside their own box, then hand passed the length of the field beating the defence leaving Castlegregorys Jack Nix, bearing down on goal one on one with goal keeper Aidan O’Halloran with Aidan O’Halloran pulling off an outstanding save of a certain goal, pushing the ball out for a 45.  The resultant 45 was kicked wide.

After 10 minutes of the 2nd half the score was St. Pats 1-08, Castlegregory 2-09.  St. Pats were looking for a goal to get back in to the game and the opportunity came after 12 minutes with Castlegregorys Aaron Crean fouled St. Pats Roman Laucher inside the box and a penalty was awarded.  Aaron Crean was given a yellow card and Roman Laucher scored the penalty.

It didn’t take long for Castlegregory to respond with Brandon Hoare scoring a good goal and again with great team play clearing the ball from inside their own 45, with the final pass, making the goal coming from Fergus Kerin.

St. Pats were looking for goals now and Roman Laucher was very unlucky with a long daisy cutter heading straight for the bottom corner of the net that was expertly saved by Castlegregorys keeper David O’Dowd.  St. Pats got a point from a free in the following attack.

Castlegregory scored the next 3 points, two from Michael Mulally , one from play and one from a free and the third from Maurice Slattery after a great long ball pass from Michael Mulally, leaving the score  St. Pats 2-09, Castlegregory 3-12, after  24 minutes of the second half.

St. Pats needed goals fast and got it in the 25th minute when Roman Laucher hand passed the ball across goal and George Carnegie fisted the ball into the net. There was only a goal between the team with 5 minutes left to play and was any bodies game.  But Castlegregory regrouped and defended well as St. Pats pushed had to score.  St. Pats keeper, Aidan O’Halloran kept them in the game when he pulled off an excellent save from a one on one opportunity in the 27th minute but from the clearance Castlegregorys Michael Mulally scored a point.

With St. Pats needing goals and fast, gaps were being left in defence and from a long ball in Castlegregorys Jack Nix sealed the win by scoring 4th goal in the 29th minute.  St. Pats Jack Foley just had enough time to add one more point after that leaving the final score St. Pats 3-10, Castlegregory 4-13

Chairperson of the Central region, Liam O’Rochain, handed Castlegregorys winning captain, John Joe Hussey the Division 3 Vincent Murphy Sports Castleisland Trophy and the Vincent Murphy Sports Castleisland man of the match was awared to Brandon Hoare who score 2-05 during the game.
